BAME Equality

At AAD 2018 the name of the BEM (Black and Ethnic Minority) representative committee was changed to BAME representative commitee.

The Committee continuously campaign against the far Right by leafleting, taking part in counter demonstrations and working with organisations like Unite Against Fascism, and Hope not Hate.

The Committee looks at issues such as racial harassment and how to increase the numbers of black and ethnic minority people both in the union and in the industry. It is very clear that black people are woefully under-represented in the industry and this must change.  They took an active part in researching the On Track With Diversity report which looks at solutions to diversify the grade. They also carried out a survey of all ethnic minority members to gauge levers of union activity and engagement.  The results of this exercise has concentrated the committees' work.

ASLEF sends a delegation to the TUC Black Worker's Conference every year.  Motions have been submitted in recent years on a range of topics including diversifying railways, transport poverty, zero hours contracts and term time holidays.
